Canada’s Governor General to visit Ulaanbaatar, October 24-26

Prime Minister Stephen Harper on October 9 announced that His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will make a state visit to Mongolia, October 24-26, as both nations mark the 40th anniversary of Canada-Mongolia relations and the fifth anniversary of the establishment of a Canadian embassy in Ulaanbaatar. This is the first-ever visit to Mongolia by a Canadian head of state. During his visit, the Governor General will meet with President Ts. Elbegdorj,  senior government officials and leaders of civil society in both countries, with a view to strengthening bilateral relations  and deepening commercial, educational and innovation ties. He will bring with him a delegation of prominent Canadians to reinforce the Government of Canada’s priorities in Asia. The delegation will also visit China on the same trip.

The Governor General  will deliver an address before the State Great Khural  (Parliament) and promote Canada's investment interests and commercial collaboration at both a business networking breakfast with Canadian business leaders and during an education round table with Canadian institutions and Mongolian stakeholders, ahead of the first-ever Canadian Education Fair in Mongolia on October 27. The Governor General and his wife will visit the Children of the Peak Sanctuary, a project run by a Canadian non-profit organization aimed at helping vulnerable children in Ulaanbaatar and meet with women parliamentarians who are taking on a stronger leadership role in Mongolia.  Regular updates on the Governor General’s State Visit will be available online at www.gg.ca, where speeches, photos and videos will be posted.
