Cartan Sumner of Peabody Energy joins NAMBC Board of Directors

Chairman Edward T. Story, Jr., has announced that L. Cartan Sumner, Jr., Vice President for International Government Relations of Peabody Energy, has been elected a member of the NAMBC Board of Directors for a term to expire at the 2010 Annual General Meeting in Ottawa.
 
Cartan Sumner has been Vice President of International Government Relations at Peabody Energy in St. Louis, MO, since October 2007. Sumner previously served as Director of Corporate Development with Peabody from 2001 to 2007. In that post, he was a member of the company’s mergers and acquisitions team participating in multiple domestic and international transactions, including Peabody’s acquisition of Australia’s Excel Coal Limited in 2006 as well as its purchase of the U.S., Australian and Venezuelan coal assets of RAG Coal International in 2004. In addition, Sumner was involved in Peabody’s entry into China and the establishment of the company’s Beijing Representative Office in 2005.

He has also served in strategic planning roles with the company and participated in Peabody’s initial business development activities in Mozambique.

Prior to joining Peabody Energy, Sumner was Director of Corporate Development with RPM, Inc., an Ohio-based specialty chemicals holding where he managed acquisitions, divestitures and new market development assignments in the United States, Europe and Latin America. Prior to that, Sumner served as Director of Latin American Operations for St. Louis-based Carboline Company, a subsidiary of RPM, and as an attorney in private practice in St. Louis.

Sumner is a St. Louis native and 1987 graduate of Vanderbilt University. He completed the combined J.D. / M.B.A. joint degree program at Washington University in St. Louis in 1991 as well as the Merger Week executive education course at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management in 2000.
