Hogan Lovells supports Mongolian “Save the Children” chapter

Pro bono legal advice is a part of NAMBC Member Hogan Lovells' comprehensive global Citizenship program. In Mongolia last year, as part of its pro-bono (i.e. free) service to the community, Hogan Lovells Mongolia assisted the national chapter of the “Save the Children” international NGO with technical legal review of the draft Law of Mongolia on Child Rights and the draft Law of Mongolia on Child Protection, which earned the law firm a special citation (see photo above). Post-election IRI-Global Affairs Canada poll shows high optimism and high expectations for new government and for future of Mongolian democracy

Despite the country’s continued economic crisis and public concerns about corruption, a nationwide survey of Mongolian voters released three months after the June 2016 elections shows that Mongolians have invested a great deal of faith in the new government and in their democratic system. Philadelphia Orchestra sherpas visit Ulaanbaatar to plan visit in June 2017; open air concert in Sukhbaatar Square will celebrate 30th anniversary of US-Mongolia relations

The Philadelphia Orchestra’s two senior advisers on international programs visited Ulaanbaatar in October to finalize arrangements for the historic visit of the 100+ member orchestra to Mongolia in June 2017, which is supported by contributions from private sector companies, the US Department of State and the US Embassy.  Vladimir Petrovic and Ari Mittleman met with Ulaanbaatar Mayor S. Batbold, Deputy Mayor Sh. Ankhmaa, T. Tamir, CEO of MIAT Mongolian Airlines, US Ambassador Jennifer Z. Galt and others. MIAT has generously volunteered to transport the Orchestra delegation. Prime Minister Erdenebat’s government appears to be addressing many of the issues listed in the US Embassy’s 2016 “Investment Climate Statement,” which was released this past summer after the June elections. As US Ambassador Jennifer Z. NAMBC Chairman Frank Herbert and board delegation meet with President, Parliament Chairman and Prime Minister

NAMBC Chairman Frank Herbert and a delegation of the NAMBC board of directors held meetings over a period of four days with senior Mongolian Government leaders in late October and came away cautiously optimistic about Mongolia’s economic recovery and the government’s commitment to welcome back foreign direct investment. NAMBC Member 5.11 Tactical – together with its Mongolian dealer, Brother Merchants LLC – recently sponsored the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) match series between the Mongolian team, “MGL-1,” versus a Japanese team, “DEEP,” at the Mongolian Wrestling Stadium earlier this fall. Each team had seven fighters, including one woman. “MGL-1” was founded in 2009. Ambassador Altangerel signs MOU to bring Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra to Mongolia for concerts, public outreach, June 5-9, 2017

Mongolia’s Ambassador to the US Bulgaa Altangerel and the CEO of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, Allison Vulgamore, signed an MOU in the US Capitol building in Washington DC in March to bring the world-famous Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra to Ulaanbaatar, notionally during June 5-9, 2017. The orchestra will be “in residence” to engage in people-to-people cultural diplomacy, including two full orchestra concerts, as well as a series of special events throughout Ulaanbaatar designed in partnership with Mongolian musicians, local schools and cultural institutions. Mongolian Ambassador to the US Bulgaa Altangerel presented the Order of the Polar Star, Mongolia’s highest decoration, to Eugene A. Theroux, Senior Counsel Emeritus of Baker & McKenzie law firm, in behalf of President Ts. Elbegdorj, citing Theroux for his contributions to US-Mongolia relations over the past quarter century. Centerra President Frank H. Herbert is elected NAMBC Chairman; first Canadian, first mining exec

Frank Herbert, President of Toronto-based Centerra Gold, has been elected Chair and CEO of the4 NAMBC, the first Canadian and the first mining company executive to serve in that post. Frank has been Vice Chairman of the NAMBC since 2012. Centerra was the first Western foreign company to start mining operations in Mongolia and the first Canadian company to join the NAMBC in the early 1990’s.
