Eelco Jager appointed to be the next Canadian ambassador to Mongolia

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird announced on January 9, 2015, the appointment of Eelco (Ed) Jager as Canada's third resident Ambassador to Mongolia. Ambassador-designate Jager replaces Gregory Goldhawk, who completed his tour of duty in Ulaanbaatar in August. Mr. Jager is expected to arrive in Mongolia in February to present his credentials to President Ts. Elbegdorj. Before joining the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in 1999 as a trade policy officer in the Investment Trade Policy Division, he worked as an attorney in the private sector. His previous postings have included serving as trade commissioner in Jakarta, 2000-2003, senior trade commissioner in Lima, 2005-2007 and political adviser in Kandahar, 2007-2008. His most recent assignment, 2008-2011, was as Canada’s senior trade commissioner in Brazil, based in Saõ Paulo. In Ottawa, Mr. Jager represented Canada’s interests at APEC, 2003-2005, and helped to negotiate Canada’s air transport agreements, 2011-2014. Mr. Jager holds an LL.B. from the University of Western Ontario (1993).
