Rio Tinto donates park in Khanbogd, breaks ground for sports center in Manlai

On the weekend of August 9-10, during the celebration of Khanbogd soum’s 90th anniversary, local officials formally opened the 5-hectare Galba Public Park, financed by Rio Tinto’s social investment program and built by a Mongolian company. The park design and planning was an initiative by local residents and the soum administration. 

Oyu Tolgoi LLC Board members, executives of Erdenes Oyu Tolgoi LLC, and Rio Tinto representatives attended the opening ceremonies, together with soum government leaders and a large crowd of area residents, many of whom work at the nearby Oyu Tolgoi mine.The park’s name is derived from the original historic name of Khanbogd soum. Park features include fountains, lawns, parking for 300 cars, restrooms and lighting.  

On July 31, Oyu Tolgoi LLC officials broke ground and laid a foundation stone for a new sports center in Manlai Soum in Umnugobi Aimag, to be financed by Oyu Tolgoi LLC and Rio Tinto as a gift to the people of Manlai. The sports center will have 250 seats and be fully equipped with modern sports equipment and facilities Galba Public Park and the Manlai Sports Center are part of Rio Tinto’s global social investment policy, which sponsored 2200 projects last year.
